In 1628 England is torn by religious conflict, and Anne Dudley helps a romantic young rebel escape from Tattershall Castle through the fens. They are pursued by the Sheriff and his men who regard her Puritan family as traitors to the King. By running, Anne risks more than her reputation as the fifteen-year old daughter of the Earl’s Steward. She also risks death.

Set in a period when women and men are persecuted for their religion, the novel tells the story of a girl who copes with a woman’s feelings while questioning her own beliefs. Anne’s spirit strengthens as she lives through romantic turmoil as well as the political danger that forces her family to leave England for the Colonies. As she begins to write, we begin to see the grown Anne Dudley Bradstreet, whose poetry is still honored today.
